The Hofstra Pride women’s soccer team added another terrific win to its resume, taking a 2-1 victory over the Towson Tigers on the road in double overtime on Friday. Hofstra entered the contest with a 9-4 record, 3-1 in the CAA while the Tigers came in with a 5-5-3 overall record and a disappointing 0-2-1 mark in the CAA.
Freshman forward Jenn Buoncore got the scoring started in the game, notching her first career goal at the 18-minute mark. The accomplishment is a big one for the freshman, who has seen her playing time steadily increase after playing a combined 13 minutes in the first two matches of the season for the Pride. Buoncore had taken 18 shots coming into the match against Towson but had yet to log a score until this game. The Pride is surely hoping her score will be the first of many in her career.
The 1-0 Pride lead held for a good amount of time, but Hofstra continued to pile on the offensive pressure, leading Towson in shots in the first half 10-4 and again in the second frame 15-4. With just over 15 minutes left in the game, the Tigers finally got their first goal off the foot of Maddie Bove, her first score of the season.
The sophomore midfielder, who has logged 26 starts for the Tigers to date, scored her first collegiate goal in the game as well, so this contest will surely be remembered by at least two players involved.
With the game tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation, the two squads headed to an overtime period to settle the score. The first extra period ended without incident and the teams went to a second overtime. At the 101st minute, Jill Mulholland knocked in her fifth goal of the season and sealed the 2-1 Pride victory.
The win, while perhaps too close for comfort for the Pride against a winless conference team, moves Hofstra to 10-4 on the year and a 4-1 record in CAA play. Towson, meanwhile, falls to 0-3-1 in the CAA after the loss. The Pride outshot the Tigers 30-9 over the course of the contest and eventually was able to wear down the defense for the victory.
