The Hofstra women’s soccer team picked up their fourth win in dominant fashion, 5-2, against UNC Greensboro in an out-of-conference battle at the Army West Point Invitational Sunday.
Senior Jill Mulholland and junior Kristin Desmond rang the bell twice for the Pride with two goals each. Mulholland’s early offensive surge of six goals has led Hofstra to an impressive 4-1-1 record this season.
The Pride came out of the gate hot with a four goal in the first half, which was enough to suppress UNC Greensboro’s efforts.
Desmond set up Mulholland for her first goal of the day early in the first 45 minutes. Just eight minutes later, senior Kerri Baum’s pass found the stroke of Desmond to put Hofstra up 2-0. Desmond’s second goal came during the 32nd minute off a volley from Mulholland to give the Pride a commanding 3-0 advantage.
UNC Greensboro’s Diarra Simmons put the Spartans on the board shortly after to cut Hofstra’s lead to two.
Hofstra junior Noriana Radwan’s free kick rattled the twine to give the Pride a 4-1 lead at halftime, her third of the campaign.
The second half opened up with an early goal from UNC Greensboro’s Melanie Spensiero, but Mulholland answered quickly with her second tally of the game, 5-2 Hofstra.
All three Pride keepers saw time between the posts. Redshirt-sophomore Ashley Wilson made three saves in the first half. Senior Friederike Mehring started the second half before junior Jenna Borresen finished the game with a save.
The invitational continues as Hofstra hosts its namesake, Army West Point, at Hofstra Soccer Stadium at 1 p.m. this Saturday.
