Hofstra’s Organization of Latin Americans (H.O.L.A.) held their 11th annual fashion show at Adam’s Playhouse last Thursday night.
The show’s theme was ‘History in the Making’ and featured clothing created by several designers from the New York and New Jersey areas.
Actress Jackie Guerra, who is most notably known for her role in the movie ‘Selena’ opposite Jennifer Lopez, hosted the evening.
Danny Cardenas, vice president of H.O.L.A. said actor John Leguizamo was originally slated to host the show, but cancelled because of a prior engagement.
Cardenas said some of the designers, including three from the University contacted him when they heard about the show.
” I knew a couple of the designers, other designers were brought to my attention, so it was just basically picking and choosing who we wanted to be in the show,” he said.
Open auditions were held to find models and they were selected based on how they would look in the type of clothing they would be wearing.
Although the show got off to a late start, the crowd was treated to a very sexy interlude, which featured business wear by designer Ariel Gonzalez.
The show also featured urban wear, eveningwear, club wear and the highly anticipated lingerie segment.
The lingerie segment included intimates by Downtown Wear LLC. and had a very elaborate setup that included a bed as part of the theme. When the shirtless, male models took the stage in their sleepwear, the female audience members cheered and screamed for their favorites. The male audience members were also treated when the female models showed off very modern pieces.
Junior Shade Ibe said during intermission that she was enjoying the show and thought it was tastefully done.
“I’m enjoying the clothing and I think the way they incorporated acting into it was very nice,” she said.
The last two segments featured independent designers, Defino, Remix Apparel, Reppin Alco and a few others. The opening skit for the segment was very futuristic and incorporated a matrix-like theme of fog, club music, and lots of tight leather.
Alexis Vargas, a freshman and one of the model directors said after the show that backstage was extremely hectic.
“The designers showed up an hour before the show, and models were still being fitted, up until show-time, which caused the show to start late,” she said.
Students who attended the show seemed rather pleased with the performances as well as the clothing.
“I really liked the fashion show even though it was kind of slow,” freshman Precious Wolo said. “There were a lot of designers and great clothes.”
