The Hofstra University volleyball team defeated the Stonehill College Skyhawks 3-1 on Friday, Sept. 8, and now sit at 8-1 on the season.
Senior Yagmur Cinel led the Pride with 13 kills. Sophomores Clara Bal and Izadora Stedile also added double-digit kills with 12 and 11 respectively.
The first set was mostly a back-and-forth affair. From a score tied at 15, Stonehill went on a 6-2 run to have a 21-17 lead. Hofstra scored the next two to make it 21-19, but the Skyhawks then took four out of the next six points to win the set 25-21.
Much like the first set, the two squads looked evenly matched when they tied the second set at 13. Hofstra began to pick up the pace for a narrow 19-18 lead. Hofstra scored three more unanswered points to extend that lead to 22-18. The Pride then scored three out of the next five points to win the set 25-20 and to even things up at one set apiece.
The third set proved to be a completely one-sided affair. Stonehill got off to a 2-1 start, but Hofstra quickly made it a 6-3 before stretching their dominance to a score of 11-6. The Skyhawks scored the next two to make it 11-8 but didn’t get the chance to get closer than this. After some back and forth, the Pride led 21-12. They then took four out of the next seven points to win the set by 10 points, 25-15.
Stonehill started the fourth set 1-0 but were unable to maintain control. The Pride scored the next five points to go up 5-1. The Skyhawks crawled back to tighten the score 7-6. Hofstra scored six straight to make it 13-6 before they went up 18-8. In direct response, Stonehill scored four unanswered to make it 18-12. Hofstra scored seven of the next nine points to win the set 25-14 and the match 3-1.
Hofstra finished the day with a .353 hit percentage, compared to Stonehill’s .206.
