After a week-long layoff, the Hofstra Pride men’s basketball team will head down south to take on Elon University for a Thursday night matchup on Jan. 26.
The Pride sits at 13-8 overall and 6-2 within Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Their last game resulted in a victory over The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). After being deadlocked at 30 after the first half of that game, Hofstra broke out in the second half, outscoring their opponent 40-16 in the half to seal the victory. Tyler Thomas led the way with 28 points, and Aaron Estrada was right behind him with 17 points, to go along with seven rebounds and four assists.
On paper, the Pride appears to have a huge upper hand over Elon. The Phoenix enter this matchup with a 2-18 overall record, and 0-7 within CAA play. They’ve dropped their past seven games, with their last win coming on Dec. 11 against Johnson & Wales University. Elon last played on Jan. 21, in which they lost 66-62 to Towson University.
On the scoring end, Elon is led by graduate student Sean Halloran, who is averaging 12.6 points per game. He also leads the team with 4.3 assists per game. Zach Ervin and Max Mackinnon are the only other players averaging double figures in scoring, with nearly 11 points per game, respectively. As a team, the Phoenix are averaging 65.6 points per game, 7.5 points less per game than their opponents. They are shooting just 29.6% from the three-point line.
Historically, Hofstra is 11-5 against Elon all-time, and have won six out of their last eight meetings. Last season, the teams faced off twice with each team winning one game.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. from the Schar Center at Elon. The game can be streamed on Flohoops and can be listened to on 88.7 FM, WRHU. Live stats will also be available at GoHofstra.com.
