Hofstra men’s lacrosse fell to Rutgers University at HighPoint.com Stadium by the score of 10-7 on Saturday March 23.
In the loss, Ryan Tierney led the way for Hofstra with three goals while Ryan Kinnard helped out with two of his own as the Pride failed to overcome Rutgers’ scoring attack.
With the game tied 4-4 midway through the second quarter of play, Rutgers began to dominate, scoring five unanswered goals until the Pride netted one midway through the fourth quarter on an unassisted goal by Kinnard.
Though the Pride managed to score two more goals after that in the fourth quarter, they were unable to overcome the third quarter Rutgers onslaught that saw Hofstra go scoreless in the second half. Their inability to muster any offense didn’t change until 8:38 remaining in the game and a 9-4 deficit. The Pride’s scoring drought lasted for approximately 32:46 of play in the contest.
“I thought we played hard,” said head coach Seth Tierney. “We need to do a better job of some of the little things that are happening to us. But it’s not for a lack of effort on our guys’ part. They’re playing as hard as they can.”
The first goal for the Scarlet Knights came with just 1:22 in the game as the Pride fell behind early. Kinnard then tied the game at 1-1 before Rutgers scored two goals within five minutes of each other to end the first quarter 3-1.
In the second quarter, the offense of both teams added to the score with Hofstra scoring three goals to the Rutgers two as they entered the break with the Scarlet Knights ahead by the score of 5-4.
“[We] got off to a little bit of a better start and now we’ve just got to work on the middle part and the finish” Seth Tierney said.
Their fourth goal would wind up being their last time scoring until 5:51 left in the game on the second goal of the day by Kinnard. Later Ryan Tierney would score two more goals to give him his fifth hat trick of the season and16th of his career.
Adam Charalambides led the way for the Scarlet Knights with four goals while Ryan Gallagher and Mark Schachte both added two.
Rutgers’ goalkeeper Max Edelmann had 18 saves on the match, more than doubling Hofstra’s Bobby Casey’s total of eight.
The game was the last in the Pride’s non-conference schedule – a stretch where the team went 3-6.
“Now we are 0-0 as we start the conference,” Seth Tierney said. “Conference play here we come.”
Hofstra will travel to Maryland on Saturday, March 30, to take on Towson University at Johnny Unitas Stadium. The game starts at 12 p.m.
