The Hofstra men’s lacrosse team suffered a disappointing 14-6 loss at home to No. 20 Georgetown University on Saturday, March 2 .
The Pride has now been dealt three consecutive losses to sit at 2-3 after opening up their season 2-0.
The game started off badly for Hofstra, as they gave up the first goal on a blown assignment just a little under a minute into the game. After earning an early 1-0 lead to start the contest, Georgetown put its foot on the pedal and never looked back.
At the end of the first quarter of play, the Pride was faced with a 4-1 deficit at home and had little life to start the second quarter. Georgetown went on to score two goals in the period to make the game 6-1 in their favor with five straight unanswered goals.
The deficit forced Ryan Tierney to become more assertive and to put two goals on the board for the Pride in the second quarter while freshman Whit Stopak added one of his own for the Hoyas. These goals were crucial for the Pride as they served to counter the four goals scored in the second quarter by Georgetown. The Hoyas continued to stay aggressive, with senior Daniel Bucaro even scoring a goal as he spun and fell with 1.8 seconds left to end the half.
“We just wanted to make the first play, whatever it may [have been],” said Hofstra head coach Seth Tierney about the team’s mindset entering the second half.
Hofstra was unable to do so as the Hoyas scored a goal a little under two minutes into the third quarter and another one just 1:20 seconds later.
“I don’t like the way the third quarter happened … The unfortunate part [is that] we didn’t win that first faceoff, so we had to start on defense,” Tierney said.
Georgetown scored three unanswered goals in the third quarter before Ryan Tierney netted his third goal of the game to secure his third hat trick of the year and the 14th of his career.
With the game at a lopsided score of 12-5 entering the last quarter, the Hoyas scored two more goals to Hofstra’s one while en route to a 14-6 win on the road.
“We had no flow, no spacing… We’re very young on the offense. We’ve got three freshmen that start and play big roles,” Tierney said.
“[The hat trick means] nothing, absolutely nothing,” Tierney said. “We’ve got to have double-digit goals every game as an offense – no matter who scores it … As long as we have double-digit goals every game, I’ll be satisfied … I’m not satisfied with this game.”
The Pride will look to get back in the winning column next Saturday, March 9, when they play against the visiting Ohio State Buckeyes, who are undefeated so far this season, at James M. Shuart Stadium.
