The opening of the new Fitness Center has sparked an explosion of new gym fanatics as students flock to join classes and jump on exercise machines. Senior Joe Aquilino, a Fitness Center staff member accounts for the gym’s newfound popularity because “Everything is big, better. A lot more is offered,”
The fitness trend is nothing new to Hofstra. Each semester the Fitness Center is greeted with plenty of attention as students look to start a new habit, to get in shape or to be more active. As the semester progresses, many students lose steam and stop attending the gym, but this semester a brand new building with shiny new equipment might change this trend.
The Fitness Center opened with a bang, offering an array of classes that have been filling up day after day with alarming speed, and reports of wait times for cardio machines have been reported. This semester the Fitness Center has added cycling and yoga, cycling being by far the most popular class offered. But the new classes are not the only ones in demand. All of the Fitness Center’s old favorites are still pulling in a crowd. Classes are so much in demand at the Fitness Center that extra classes have been added to the weekly schedule to accommodate the demand.
The Fitness Center has initiated sign-up lists for all their classes. The new sign-up schedule is on a trial period as the Fitness Center is working on coming up with the most convenient method to deal with their newfound popularity. Students must sign up for a class 30 minutes prior to it starting. All classes are first come first serve, and timing sign-ups has become crucial.
Exercise machines are also in great demand. Currently all machines in the Fitness Center are first-come, first-serve. A student is allowed to use any machine for as long as they want. The majority of the machines are usually full, but so far the Fitness Center has not discussed opening sign-ups for any exercise machines. It is a possibility that if the demand continues sign-ups might be an option to rectify the situation.
