Guaranteed, should you ever be forced to suffer your most dreaded nightmare and be trapped in a room blaring yesterday’s boy bands, you would inevitably begin toe-tapping to 98 Degrees’ Revelation, although you wouldn’t be able to differentiate between this version of the cookie-cutter fad and their predecessors, The Backstreet Boys and *Nsync. This 2000 effort is the latest from the four, who are on break.
Composed of energetic dance tracks, sentimental serenades, Latin-flavored beats and heartfelt ballads regretting unrequited love, this album is a tribute to teen angst.
Jumpstarting the party, “Give Me Just One Night” combines contemporary pop with sultry Spanish speaking.
Spitefully, “He’ll Never Be” makes vindictive promises to a less distraught ex, vowing, “but in good time, you’re gonna find / Your eyes were closed and your heart was blind.” Nick, Drew, Jeff and Justin, although beyond the adolescent years they imitate, surely comforted many heartsick teenagers, sobbing into a tear-stained pillow near the stereo.
“You can just walk away, but I don’t feel the same/My heart still beats for you, breathes for you, sings for you/And those feelings will never fade,” sums up the pity-provoking and disturbingly obsessive “Yesterday’s Letter.”
For those on the rebound, “Dizzy” inspires body movement to replace bitter sniffles; bringing to mind a lowly bar complete with a sex-depraved cad trying his best with left-handed compliments so sleazy and spurred by ulterior motives they become insults.
Elsewhere, the disc represents all love-struck, starry-eyed kids searching for a companion with sincere sentiments expressed in “You Should Be Mine,” and, for the victim of a long-term, one-sided crush, confessions in “You Don’t Know.”
While the unattainable can be more intriguing, “My Everything,” and “The Way You Do,” professes testaments to deep, mutual affections.
Despite being enjoyable and relatable, Nick did a smart thing in marrying a headline-maker, securing his place in People long beyond his allotted 15 minutes. Ultimately, Revelation is prescribed for the pining.
