The scrimmages are over and the wait nearly is too. The next time the Pride men’s lacrosse team plays against another team at James M. Shuart Stadium, it will be in the inaugural game of the 2015 season.
The Pride took on Hobart College and Rutgers University in frigid temperatures and high winds at their home stadium Saturday. The scrimmages were closed to the public due to the venue’s conditions from a snowstorm earlier this week.
Both games didn’t pay too much mind to score, as the scoreboard was reset after each 15-minute period of play. Instead, the focus was on preparation and letting new players get reps.
In the latter game vs. Rutgers, Hofstra outscored Rutgers over the four periods, 10-3. In the first two quarters, reserve goalie Jack Concannon turned in an impressive performance, shutting out the Scarlet Knights.
Hofstra scored 5 times in the first two periods, four of which were by familiar faces, one pair by Korey Hendrickson (17 goals in 2014), and another two by sophomore Brier Davis, while one was scored by freshman Tim Golden.
In the second half, starting goalie and All-CAA selection Chris Selva took the field, surrendering three goals, two of which were in the closing minutes of the scrimmage.
Sophomore Trevor Kupecky lead off the Hofstra scoring, while freshman attacker Brendan Kavanagh and junior defenseman Finn Sullivan added two in the following two minutes.
In the final period of play, recent Major League Lacrosse selection Mike Malave fired a high-speed shot in for a score, while senior Tyler Begley capped the day with an Alex Moeser-assisted score.
The Pride now looks ahead to February 14th where they will open their season at home against Marquette University. Hofstra will seek to avenge a loss against the same Golden Eagles team in their season opener last year.
