Last week The Chronicle ran a front-page story on the state of campus security, more specifically on past instances of rape. The instances of rape are an enormous issue for this community and we work hard to keep readers abreast of the information, as it is available.
Unfortunately, the article, “Rape leaves questions for campus security,” hugely overstated the number of forcible sex offenses and to a lesser extent, the number of aggravated assaults. The correction notice and factual clarifications are on page two. The error was not a careless oversight, but rather a misinterpretation of a complicated statistics report. On Friday of last week, The Chronicle realized the error and immediately posted a correction on the Web site.
That said, the impact of inaccurate information printed in this paper is a serious and inexcusable matter. Senior editors carefully reviewed the details of the situation and are continuing to work on preventative reforms. In an effort to avoid future instances of inaccurate reporting of statistics, fact checkers will review a reporter’s article where appropriate.
We apologize to the University community and our readers for the mistake.
