While the outside of the Frying Pan has been restored to her original appearance, the inside retains the barnacle-encrusted, sunken-ship motif that acknowledges her storied past. This provides the perfect stage for the story of Melilot, Chica Chubb and Ponto, three clowns who get caught up in a fantasy world full of elite Warriors, bumbling Pirates, dancing Sirens, and an evil El Capitán MartÃn. As the story unfolds, the audience explores the boat and sees how our three farcical friends get into mischief. All the while, the minstrel Pickwick will regale you with stories and help guide you through the ship. The boat will remain docked during the performances.
2 Cities Productions is a new company bringing a different kind of performance to the theatre world. With the idea of El Sartén the shows will bring the audience into the environment of the performers. Most theatre today has a proscenium stage with the audience sitting and watching the action from their seats totally removed from the performance. Instead, 2 Cities puts the audience in the middle of the action. Moving the audience through space naturally gives them a different reaction than if they were merely sitting. It is bringing the sights and sounds of the film into a live performance.
Lightship “Frying Pan” is listed on both the New York State and Federal Registers of Historic Places, as it is one of 13 lightships remaining from more than 100 built. Lightship Frying Pan has led a remarkable life. After being abandoned for 10 years while docked at an old oyster cannery in the Chesapeake Bay, she sank. She was underwater for three years before being raised by salvers. After tons of silt and shells were removed from the hull, the ship was outfitted with a new engine and in 1989 was sailed to her current home at the new Chelsea Waterside Park.
