Abby Gibson, Arts & Entertainment Editor March 4, 2025
Sarah Kinsley is a 24-year-old American singer-songwriter from California with Chinese-American descent who is best known for her song, “The King,” which became a mass hit on TikTok in 2021. Kinsley has had a love for music and its production for her whole life. When she moved to Connecticut, Kinsley performed the violin in her youth orchestra, growing her expertise in the instrument, while also learning classical piano. When she was in middle school, Kinsley began listening to pop music and fell in love. She then learned how to play the cello and how to play guitar.

Cameron Winter’s ‘Heavy Metal’ is new, weird and powerful

Peter Massarrone, Staff Writer March 4, 2025
Want to hear a new genre? Cameron Winter, lead singer of the alternative rock band “Geese,” is a 22-year- old from Brooklyn, New York, who lives with his parents and just released his first solo act, “Heavy Metal,” in December of last year. Despite the album’s name, it is the furthest thing from heavy metal. The best way I can describe his music, which feels like an entirely new genre inspired by the likes of Leonard Cohen, is a mix of indie blues and pop.

Bad Bunny’s sixth album is a beautiful tribute to Puerto Rico

Michelle Rabinovich, Staff Writer February 11, 2025
In “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” (“I Should Have Taken More Photos”), Bad Bunny’s sixth studio album, he intertwines expressions of love for his homeland with the mourning of a past relationship. Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, released an album in the dead of winter that had a summer-like feeling, helping us cope with the winter blues by marrying genres like salsa, reggaeton, dembow and plena.

Not your average ‘BRAT’ cover story

Anthony Favilla, Special to the Chronicle February 11, 2025
The cover for Charli XCX’s album “BRAT” is ugly; at least, it should be.

Films that are alive with the sound of music

Michael Gaborno, Staff Writer December 10, 2024
Music and film are two incredibly powerful and widely consumed art forms, so when the latter is artistically informed by the former and filmmakers understand how to execute this tantalizing marriage, cinema’s potential can seldom be more exciting. The following films exhibit such qualities, ranging from highly recognized classics from bygone eras of Hollywood to wildly different modern critiques of fame in the music industry that are masterful all the same.

CHROMAKOPIA: ‘Can you feel the light, inside?’

Grace Luty, Special to the Chronicle November 12, 2024
It has been three years since Tyler, The Creator released the album “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST,” and his musical return has come with a creative bang: “CHROMAKOPIA,” his newest release, is the artist’s eighth studio album. Shortly before the album came out, Tyler released his single “St. Chroma.” The song begins with Tyler whisper-rapping his lyrics as if he has a confession to tell. Fans were eager to hear what Tyler had to say. “CHROMAKOPIA” is inspired by his mother’s advice and what he learned from life experiences. The collection is narrated by Tyler’s mother, Bonita Smith.

‘Short n’ Sweet’- an album that’s exactly that

Aidan Judge, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR September 10, 2024

It has been quite the year for former Disney Channel star Sabrina Carpenter. In late 2023 and early 2024, Carpenter opened for sections of Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” in Latin America and Asia. This earned her a career boost that would push her popularity to heights beyond the expectations of the music executives representing her. Since Carpenter’s rapid popularity growth, three of her singles have reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, with “Please Please Please” snatching the No. 1 spot back in June. Most impressively, “Short n’ Sweet” earned over 350,000 sales units in its first week of release, nearly 20 times the individual sales of her 2022 album “emails i can’t send.” “Short n’ Sweet” is an all-around victory for Carpenter – and the compressed and consistent quality of the album makes it deserving of every unit sold.
