The Hofstra University baseball team blanked Stony Brook University 4-0 in their road series opener on Thursday, May 14. The Pride improved to 19-26 overall and 13-15 in Coastal Athletic Association play.
CJ Griggs recorded his first career multi-home run game in the contest, striking first with a two-run home run in the first inning and a solo shot in the ninth.Â
Carlos Martinez was stellar on the mound for the Pride, pitching into the ninth inning for the second consecutive start. Through 8.1 innings pitched, he recorded seven strikeouts and allowed zero earned runs through 115 pitches. Martinez has seven or more strikeouts in each of his last seven starts.Â
The Pride scored three runs in the first inning on five consecutive hits. Michael Brown singled to center field to begin the game and then stole second base. Griggs sent one over the right field wall for his seventh home run of the season. Gabriel Melara followed with a single through the left side of the infield. Nick Gallello singled and Tyler Cox knocked an RBI single to score Melara, extending the lead to three runs.Â
The Seawolves had an opportunity to tie the game with one swing in the second inning with runners on first and second. James Schaffer lined a single to center and Nick Zampieron followed with a single of his own. Martinez bounced back, striking out Nicholas Dromboski and Chanz Doughty.Â
The Pride loaded the bases for the second time in the seventh inning, looking to add insurance runs. Griggs remained hot with a single for his second hit of the game. With two outs, Gallello singled on the first pitch he saw. Cox walked to load the bases and Nick Biddle flew out to end the inning.Â
The game remained scoreless until the ninth inning, as Griggs led off the inning with his eighth home run of the season.Â
Martinez recorded one out in the ninth inning before Mike Villani singled to right field. Tanner Sanderoff shut down the Seawolves; Matthew Jackson reached on a fielder’s choice for the second out and Mike Cervoni struck out looking to end the game.
Sanderoff recorded his second save of the season, leading the team in the category. The victory evened the season series between Hofstra and Stony Brook at 2-2 following their matchup last month.Â
The Pride returned to action against Stony Brook on Friday, May 15. First pitch at Joe Nathan Field was scheduled for 2 p.m.Â
