The No. 5 seed Hofstra University baseball team’s 2026 run came to an end on Saturday, May 23, when they faced a double elimination. The Pride lost 5-3 to the No. 1 seed Campbell University and 5-4 to the No. 2 seed Northeastern University in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) tournament held at Brooks Field on the campus of UNC-Wilmington.
The Pride finished their season with a 22-29 overall record and a 14-16 record in CAA play.
Carlos Martinez made his second start in three days, opening the game by striking out the side and pitching another pair of scoreless innings. Martinez gave up his first of four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Martinez allowed a pair of hits to open the inning. Then, Joey Morton hit into a fielder’s choice, and Tyler Castrataro committed an error at second base that allowed the Camels to score.
Campbell extended their lead to four runs in the bottom of the sixth when Morton hit his 21st home run, a three-run blast to right field.
Diminishing stamina in Hofstra’s lineup led to less frequent offensive explosions. It took the Pride until the top of the seventh inning to first score in the pair of games. With runners on second and third, Castrataro made his way to the plate for his third at-bat after a wild pitch from reliever Braxton Shaffer moved both runners into scoring position. Shaffer ultimately walked Castrataro, but a second wild pitch allowed Tyler Cox to score. Danny Corona followed by hitting a sacrifice fly to right fielder Lukas Schramm, which allowed Nick Biddle to cross the plate.
Jackson Bauer, who came in for relief after Martinez, gave up a home run in the sixth. Bauer opened the bottom of the seventh in a similar way that Martinez ended his appearance: by giving up Logan Chapman’s fifth homer of the year. Cox responded in the top of the ninth with his own leadoff homer, but the Pride were unable to profit off Cox’s late-game heroics, as the Camels would not surrender any more runs.
After an hour of rest, the Pride returned to Brooks Field for another game. In an unusual move, Tanner Sanderoff got his first start of the year but only went two innings into game two. Sanderoff allowed Northeastern to score early in the first inning, giving a 1-0 lead to the Huskies on an RBI single to Matt Brinker.
The game remained 1-0 until Sanderoff left the bases loaded for Brayden Gregg in the third. Gregg walked the first batter he faced to force in a second run for Northeastern. Gregg’s next batter, Carmelo Musacchia, ripped a sacrifice fly out to center fielder Cox on the first pitch of the at-bat, driving Ryan Gerety in for another run.
In the bottom of the fifth, Hofstra’s pitching staff allowed their third homer of the day, a two-run shot to AJ Aschettino on the first pitch from Grady Lacourciere.
The Pride scored their first three runs consecutively in the top of the sixth off reliever Andrew Rogovic. Rogovic came into the game with bases loaded, walked Cox to bring in a run and allowed two runs to score on wild pitches.
Nate Lynn, a pinch hitter, was the last Pride batter to drive in a run on the year. Lynn singled up the middle of the field to send Biddle home from second base, making it a 5-4 ballgame. The Pride could not tie the game in the top of the ninth, sending them home after losing two straight games.
