Anne Rice’s Belinda reveals a darker side of human nature. It is one of passion, lust and desire. Apart from her other novels, Rice’s Belinda closely examines the consequences of human nature, one that neither resistance nor rejection can prevent. The story follows young, 16-year-old Belinda who becomes the object of desire for a 44-year-old illustrator Jeremy Walker. The book is written from two different perspectives: Jeremy’s and Belinda’s; this allows the readers to envision the different worlds that Jeremy and Belinda experience. As the relationship grows into something of more than mere lust, Jeremy discovers that Belinda is the daughter of an infamous international actress. As a result, he becomes more concerned about her lifestyle and well-being. But as Jeremy continues to persist and show concern, Belinda begins to push him away because she becomes ashamed of her life. Their relationship becomes a hindrance to their lives outside of their bond. Rice dedicates the novel to herself, making it the most passionate novel she has ever written.

Because this book is so closely removed from reality, readers will take pleasure indulging themselves in such an incredible situation. The dramatic phases in the story make it impossible for readers to put the book down. In addition, the fact that the book was written in two perspectives allows readers to take on both the characters’ roles. This novel invites readers to re-examine their lives and appreciate it. The story of Jeremy and Belinda may be a fantasy, but the genuine love that they share is the epitome of an everlasting relationship, regardless of age and lifestyles. As a fearless writer, Rice pushes the limits in contemporary fiction, giving more reason to read this book.
