Hofstra’s Relay for Life committee held its annual fall kick-off Wednesday Nov. 4. The event is the start of fundraising for Hofstra’s ninth annual Relay, which will take place April 23 through the 24. Registration opened with a discounted team fee of $10.
This year’s Relay for Life goal is $100,000, a goal they have not reached since 2013. The committee this year is co-chaired by senior marketing major Jab Brachocki, and senior international business major Olivia Konstantinidis. Both Brachocki and Konstantinidis have participated in Hofstra’s Relay for Life since their freshman year and have been chairs since last year.
“Our goal is definitely to not only fundraise through teams, but also to fundraise as the Relay for Life Committee,” said Konstantinidis.
To try and push more Hofstra students to participate, the committee has added a theme to this year’s Relay: Disney.
“We think by adding different activities and reaching out to different clubs who haven’t been as involved, we can really pull the Hofstra community together,” said Brachocki.
Some students and organizations have already registered for the spring Relay. Beyond a large community-wide Hofstra event, many students hold the Relay for Life cause close to their hearts.
“It’s the fight, it’s doing something bigger than yourself that affects so many people” said senior public relations major Nia Balbo.
