Hofstra is scorching hot with five straight wins especially in their most recent 10-9 comeback victory over Elon this past Friday. The Pride clinched the top seed in the CAA Championship.
“I thought we started off very slow, we had our backs against the wall,” said head coach Shannon Smith. “We had a lot of people step up for us.”
The last time the Pride went on a five-game winning streak was in 2009. Also, as of this week, Altomare is leading the entire nation in points per game and April Iannetta is seventh in the nation for caused turnovers.
Hofstra went into halftime down 3-6 but they started their rally early in the second half. Attacker Katie Kirk found the back of the net just after a minute in from a man up advantage.
Elon fought back with two goals of their own, pushing their lead to 8-4 with approximately twenty minutes left.
Pride attacker Becky Conto scored back-to-back goals that became the main source of a 3-0 run that put Hofstra within one.
The next seven minutes was nothing but defense. With about ten minutes to play, Elon took a two-goal lead. Hofstra was not able to answer back until under the seven-minute mark.
Katie Kirk scored and completed the hat trick, her last goal sparked another 3-0 rally for the Pride to take over at the end.
Morgan Knox came up in the clutch with the game-winning shot that brought the Pride up 10-9 with 51 seconds left.
The Pride defense secured the remaining seconds for the win, Hofstra was dominant on shots more than doubling Elon 32-14.
Aside from Kirk, senior Brittian Altomare put up yet another four- point performance with two pairs of assists and goals as well as seven draw controls.
Kirk’s hat trick was also her first three goals on the season in two game appearances. Freshmen attacker Becky Conto contributed with two goals and an assist.
Hofstra overall is 10-4, and are at an impeccable 5-0 in CAA play. They are just one win away from being undefeated within the CAA.
