Nassau County Police arrested two men on charges of burglary for stealing groceries from Dutch Treats after it closed early Sunday Sept. 12.
A University student and Daniel Giglio, 24, of Wantagh, N.Y., were arrested. The student has been suspended from campus pending a hearing.
Eisa Shukran, director of dining services and Joann Carie, the manager on duty before the breakin occurred, confirmed that approximately $150 worth of merchandise was taken.
Bracht said a third man was also seen exiting Dutch Treats by Public Safety with bags of food and merchandise, but fled before he could be apprehended. Public Safety could not identify the other man and neither of the two apprehended men will reveal his name.
All of the stolen merchandise was recovered and replaced, Bracht said.
As of April 2004, Dutch Treats remains open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while classes are in session. However, at 2 a.m. the doors are closed and students must swipe their identification cards to enter.
The swipe card system was added to Dutch Treats this semester to ensure the safety of both the workers and the students in Dutch Treats in the early morning hours.
Shukran said there are three management shifts at Dutch Treats, 12 to 8 a.m., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. The morning of the burglary Carie was the manager on duty from 5 p.m. until 1 a.m.
“There was a schedule misunderstanding,” Shukran said. “[Carie] made the decision to close at the end of her shift. She called Public Safety to tell them we were closing and to turn on the alarm. She assumed this automatically turned off the swipe machine.”
Carie said there was a miscommunication about who was supposed to cover the shift. The person who was expected to be there had the day off, she said.
Bracht said that Public Safety has no record of a call from Dutch Treats about closing early.
“Yes, I did call them, that is what I am supposed to do. I called them when I got out of [Dutch Treats] around 1:15 a.m.,” Carie said.
According to Christopher Westby, the director of HofstraCard Services, if Dutch Treats was going to close early, procedurally the manager would call Public Safety and if the Office of Card Services was closed, then Public Safety could page one of the HofstraCard employees.
“We get beeped by Public Safety four times a week with card problems. We have access to the Hofstra network from home and we can fix problems from home. If Dutch Treats closes early, we can cancel swipe access from home,” Westby said.
Westby also said when the door at Dutch Treats is locked by Swipe system is activated at 2 a.m. for the safety of students and workers in Dutch Treats. Stephanie Woodrow/ The Chronicle key the swipe machine is automatically turned on and can only be turned off by HofstraCard Services.
In order to ensure future security near and around Dutch Treats, new measures have been implemented.
“We have recently hired Troy Hernandez who will be overseeing Hofstra USA and Dutch Treats,” Shukran said. In the future if there are any problems at either of these locations, or if Dutch Treats needs to close early, it will be a requirement that Hernandez is contacted.
