A University sophomore was arrested after he struck a fellow student with his vehicle while driving under the influence and fled from the scene.
The 19-year-old male, whose name was not released, was driving north past the University Club at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Sunday Sept. 5, when he hit a 20-year-old sophomore and continued driving.
Public Safety Director Ed Bracht said a Public Safety officer in the security booth immediately ran to the victim and checked for injuries.
The victim was transported to Nassau University Medical Center and treated for trauma to the head, left leg, left arm and shoulder.
Public Safety alerted the Third Precinct and searched the campus for the car, which had a shattered windshield from the impact of the victim.
When the car was located in the parking lot, officers ran the license plate in their database and found out the identity of the suspect.
Public Safety officers and police officers immediately went to the dorm room of the suspect, whose blood-alcohol level was .06, and took him to the precinct.
The suspect was charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an incident-both of which are misdemeanors. He was later released on his own recognizance (ROR).
“He was [also] issued [University] summonses for underage drinking, reckless driving and leaving the scene,” Bracht said. “And the other two passengers in his car were summonsed for underage drinking and leaving the scene.”
The victim was hospitalized for two days and he is currently back in class, Bracht said. The driver’s conference is scheduled for Oct. 13 at the Nassau County Court.
