The latest chapter in the “Battle of Long Island” was a chapter that the Hofstra women’s lacrosse team will probably want to forget, as the Pride’s season came to a bitter end with a 18-4 loss to cross-island rival Stony Brook on Friday night at Shuart Stadium.
“I give our kids a lot of credit for never giving up,” said Hofstra head coach Shannon Smith after the game. “It was really nice to see our seniors get those goals for us.”

It was Senior Night for the Pride, as Audrey Byrd, Becky Conto, Alexis Greene and Morgan Knox were all honored in a pre-game ceremony for all that they’ve accomplished in their Hofstra careers.

Two of those seniors, Conto and Knox, provided all of the offense that Hofstra could muster against the juggernaut Seawolves, scoring a pair of goals each in their final games in the blue and gold.

Unfortunately, those four goals came in the second half, and after Stony Brook had put the game well, well out of reach.

But even with their backs against the wall, Conto and Knox refused to give up, leaving it all out on the field for the final time.

“They’re seniors, it’s probably their last ever game of lacrosse, and they played with a lot of fight and heart out there,” Smith said. “I wouldn’t expect anything less from them.”

Before Conto was able to put Hofstra on the board, Stony Brook’s offense put on a show for the fans in attendance, rattling off 17 consecutive goals over the first 46 minutes of Friday’s game.

The Ohlmiller sisters, Taryn and Kylie, were at the epicenter of the Seawolves’ offense from the get-go. Kylie Ohlmiller scored six goals and dished out four assists, while her sister Taryn had five goals and three assists.

They each took seven shots, contributing to Stony Brook’s massive shot output. In total, the Seawolves took 33 shots, 26 of them on goal. Many of Stony Brook’s goals came from a transition offense that was simply too fast and too efficient for the Hofstra defense to contain.

“Stony Brook’s transition game was dominant,” Smith said. “They had 19 goals on us…about 12 or 13 were coming out of transition.”

Hofstra’s offense, already hard-pressed to keep up with the high-octane offense from its opponent, just couldn’t get going until it was too late. Two of the Pride’s biggest scoring threats all year, Alyssa Parrella and Drew Shapiro, were held in check all night long, getting just six combined shots off.

For Parrella, who wrapped up an incredible freshman season on Friday, it was the first time in her short Hofstra career that she was held without a single point.

“Not a lot of freshman could do what Alyssa [Parrella] does for us,” Smith said. “Just because Alyssa Parrella didn’t have any points doesn’t mean that she didn’t do well out there.”

Hofstra finishes the season at 8-8, while Stony Brook improves to 15-1.
