Over the past month, many celebrities have decided to enter the food industry. Notable people including Tyler, the Creator, Travis Scott and Charli D’Amelio have launched their own partnerships with different food brands.
Tyler, the Creator, famous rapper, producer and fashion designer, released his Pluto Bleu ice cream. This is his second collaboration with Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream. The Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream website describes it as “more a feeling than an actual flavor, really.” The ice cream flavor itself tastes like a blue raspberry slushie and an orange push pop mixed together. Pluto Bleu was officially in stores as recently as Monday, Sept. 21 and customers were also able to order the ice cream online before its in-store release.
This is not the first time Tyler, the Creator has linked with Jenni’s Splendid Ice Cream. In 2019, Tyler the creator released his “Snowflake,” a limited-time flavor with the ice cream company. While Tyler, the Creator explored the dessert side of the food business, Travis Scott has tapped into the fast food industry.
Travis Scott, another famous rapper, partnered with McDonald’s to create the “Travis Scott Meal.” This meal was added to McDonald’s menus on Tuesday, Sept. 8. On the McDonald’s website, the burger is described as “a 1/4 lb. of 100% fresh beef topped with onions, pickles and two slices of melty cheese, plus ketchup and mustard … it’s also got shredded lettuce and crispy bacon because that’s how Cactus Jack likes it (straight up!). We recommend getting the whole Travis Scott Meal, because honestly … it slaps.”
This meal has gained a lot of attention on the internet. Since its release and introduction, the Travis Scott burger has been referred to as the “Travvy Patty” by many online. It has also become a trend to go through the McDonald’s drive-thru, say the words “you know what I’m here for,” and proceed to blast Scott’s song “Sicko Mode” through the speakers. The last time McDonalds collaborated with a celebrity was 30 years ago with Michael Jordan. This new Travis Scott Meal will be available to order for a limited time; sales will be ending on October 4, 2020.
Charli D’Amelio, a 16-year-old TikTok star, has also collaborated with fast food chain Dunkin’ Donuts. Charli has never been shy about her love for Dunkin’ as videos of her drinking Dunkin’ Donuts coffee often appear in her TikToks. On Wednesday, Sept. 2 Dunkin’ Donuts announced their newest addition to the menu, “The Charli”. On their website, the Charli is described as “Charli’s go-to coffee order, a Dunkin’ Cold Brew with whole milk and three pumps of caramel swirl.”
This drink is said to have a lot of caffeine in it. A Dunkin’ Donuts employee on TikTok even gave advice to Charli’s younger audience to not order it as a cold brew, because it is far too much caffeine.
Food collaborations like these are all very popular for these celebrities’ original audience demographics. However, they also allow celebrities to move past their fan base and gain wider hype around themselves and their brand, because food is something anyone can enjoy.
While these new menu items are certainly not the first ever celebrity food collaborations, their rise in popularity over the last month may mean that customers will start to see more familiar names on menus in the future.
