Selena Gomez began her acting and singing career working for The Walt Disney Company, more specifically, its television network, Disney Channel. As a child star working for Disney, Gomez was required to maintain a pure and clean image, so as to not tarnish the company’s long-standing family-friendly reputation. Gomez was not able to break from her Disney persona until she released her first solo album, “Stars Dance,” in 2013.
The album was a huge hit for Gomez, as was her 2015 follow-up album, “Revival.” In addition to broadening her music career, Gomez also pursued acting opportunities that were more challenging than her early Disney roles.
Gomez continued to grow as an artist, not only appearing in films but also producing and directing them. For example, Gomez is the executive producer of two popular yet controversial Netflix productions. One is the television adaptation of Jay Asher’s “13 Reasons Why,” a graphic drama about teen suicide and depression. The other, a mini-series titled “Living Undocumented,” tells the story of undocumented immigrants living in America.
Gomez has also been very open about the toll that fame has taken on her mental and physical health. Despite her struggle with lupus, a serious autoimmune disorder, Gomez has been nominated for a number of awards throughout her career. Whether you’re a fan of Gomez or not, there is no denying that she has risen above personal challenges to achieve amazing success.
After many years of waiting, Gomez’s fans were thrilled when the star began releasing new songs. On Wednesday, Oct. 23, Gomez dropped her single “Lose You To Love Me,” which has already ranked No. 1 on Spotify and No. 2 globally. This song is rumored to have been inspired by her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber and the heartache caused by his engagement to Hailey Baldwin, now Hailey Bieber. Justin Bieber began dating Hailey Bieber just two months after he and Gomez separated. Some of the lyrics from this song include: “I gave my all and they all know it / You turned me down and now it’s showing / In two months you replaced us / Like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it / In the thick of healing, yeah.”
One hour after the song premiered, Hailey Bieber posted a screenshot of Summer Walker’s song, “I’ll Kill You.” This was thought to be a retaliation toward Gomez for her inflammatory lyrics. Gomez responded with a live video on Instagram.
“I am grateful for the response that the song is getting,” Gomez said. “I’m so grateful. However, I do not stand for women tearing women down. And I will never, ever be by that. So, please be kind to everyone. It doesn’t matter what the situation is. If you’re my fans, don’t be rude to anybody, please. Don’t go off and say things that you just feel in the moment. And just please, from me, know that that’s not my heart. My heart is only to release things that I feel that are me and that I’m proud of. And that’s all that I’ll say.”
Selena Gomez fans have enjoyed watching her transition from a child star to a young adult, and she continues to excite with a new single at the top of the charts and an album soon to follow.
