It’s funny how it goes in the metal music; one minute, you’re a band trying to make ends meet in the underground scene. The next, you’re a fan favorite all over the place. God Forbid’s Gone Forever appeared to come out of nowhere, but the album has sure caught along many metal listeners across the nation. As heavy as their album is, God Forbid has certainly opened up and appealed to fans all over.
The follow up to the 2001 release, Determination, Gone Forever is a reminder of the recent sweep of metalcore that’s been taking over these past couple of months. Bands like Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, Premonitions of War, and Black Dahlia Murder have already begun to reinvent the metal scene, but New Jersey’s God Forbid is a certain band that can reach to many people out there. Their first single, “Better Days,” is an interesting blend of metalcore and the tradition sound of heavy metal. The execution is right on the money and vocalist Byron Davis hits just about every note perfectly.
Throughout Gone Forever, God Forbid proves that metalcore is a hot commodity with songs such as “Antihero” and “Force-Fed.” Metalcore can be best described as a combination of hardcore metal and the intensity of grindcore and thrash metal. As you can hear, guitarists Dallas and Doc Coyle (both brothers) deliver the goods, while drummer Corey Pierce gives Gone Forever a tribal feel. It should be noted that most of Gone Forever sounds a bit like Sepultura in their post-Max Cavalera days.
Things are looking up for God Forbid; after touring with bands such as Shadows Fall and Chimaira, they will be taking part on the Jagermeister Spring Tour with Slipknot, and Fear Factory. After that, God Forbid will be touring all summer long on Second Stage at the ever-popular Ozzfest tour with bands such as Hatebreed, Lamb of God, Lacuna Coil, Bleeding Through, Unearth, and Slipknot set to headline the Second Stage. With an awesome new album in tow, God Forbid will certainly make a lot of noise with Gone Forever.
