The Hofstra University baseball team dropped their last regular season game against the Monmouth University Hawks 30-3 on Saturday, May 18.
Hofstra used 10 pitchers in this last game to try and stop the unstoppable Monmouth offense, especially in the ninth inning. Hofstra could not close out the game, allowing the Hawks to score 11 runs in the last inning with Matt Scrivanic topping their 30th run with a three-run bomb.
Monmouth accumulated 30 runs on 19 hits throughout the game, with the help of their starting pitcher Kevin Opanel going six innings allowing two runs off five hits with three strikeouts.
On the other side, Penn Sealey started the game for the Pride but only lasted 0.2 innings, allowing five runs off two hits. In the first inning, Sealey gave up five runs off a hit by pitch, walk and two singles, the last by Brendan Buecker to go up 5-0. In the second, Chris Andrews blew the game open with a three-run home run over the left-field wall to give Monmouth an 8-0 lead.
The only times Hofstra scored came in the second inning with a Sealey double, scoring two runs, and in the seventh with a Nick LoBello single, scoring the third and final run of the game for Hofstra. Hofstra only accumulated seven hits throughout the game. Sealey led the Pride with two RBIs.
Monmouth obliterated the scoreboard in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, putting 11 more runs on the board with three doubles, two singles and two home runs.
The Hawks continued to pounce the ball in the ninth, driving in 11 more runs and capping off a 30-3 win in the last game of the season.
Andrews and Phil Stahl led Monmouth with four RBIs apiece, while many other contributors like James Harmstead and Trey Porter had three or fewer. Stahl, Harmstead and Austin Denlinger each had three hits.
Now that the regular season is over, Hofstra is the sixth seed in the Coastal Athletic Association championship after winning the series over Monmouth on Friday, May 17, punching their ticket for the first time since 2022.
Hofstra finished the season with a 23-31 overall record for the 2024 season and a 13-14 conference record.
The tournament will be held at UNC-Wilmington and Hofstra will go up against the number three seed, the Northeastern University Huskies, on Wednesday, May 22, with the first pitch set for 4 p.m.
