The Hofstra University women’s basketball team ended an eight-game losing skid with a 58-44 win over Towson University on Sunday, Feb.11. The Pride will continue Coastal Athletic Association play (CAA) with another edition of the Battle of Long Island on Friday, Feb. 16, against Stony Brook University.
Hofstra enters this game with the second-worst record in the CAA, as the team is 2-8. However, head coach Danielle Santos-Atkinson’s squad is 8-13 overall on the season. Stony Brook is tied with North Carolina A&T State University for the top record in the CAA at 9-2. The Seawolves are 19-3 overall this season.
The Pride come off the team’s win over Towson, their first since Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023. Zyheima Swint led the way with a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double, her fourth of the season. Sorelle Ineza had 13 points, which led Hofstra up in Maryland.
Swint currently leads the CAA in rebounds per game at 8.5, while her 165 total rebounds are good for fifth in the conference. Emma Von Essen looks to continue her sharpshooting ways, as her 3.0 3-pointers per contest puts her at the top of the CAA.
It was only 14 days ago on Friday, Feb. 2, that Stony Brook took the first game of the series in Hempstead 67-49.
Stony Brook is coming off a big win, blowing out Northeastern University 71-35. Those 35 were the least the Seawolves had given up in a game in seven years. Khari Clark from Stony Brook had 15 points in the victory and was a rebound away from a double-double.
The dominant team performance was helped by the Seawolves only giving up seven points combined in the second and third quarters of the game.
Clark averages 16.5 points per game which is tied for first the best in the CAA. She is also second in the CAA with 362 total points and her teammate, Gigi Gonzalez, is only two points behind her for third. Victoria Keenan is the best 3-point shooter in the conference, with a 42% success rate. She is second only to Von Essen for total triples.
The Seawolves have won the last seven meetings in the Long Island rivalry. Hofstra looks to end that streak and make it two straight wins. Tip-off from Island Federal Credit Union Arena is at 6:31 p.m.
