The Hofstra Pride men’s basketball team made an acquisition on Monday night as former Iona center Silas Sunday announced his commitment to join the Pride via his personal Twitter and Instagram pages. Initially an international recruit from Lucan, Ireland, Sunday was one of 10 players to transfer out of Iona following the sudden departure of head coach Rick Pitino. Standing 7-foot-1 and 290 pounds, Sunday instantly becomes the tallest player to wear a Hofstra uniform since the 1992-93 season.
Sunday didn’t see much playing time as a freshman last season, making 26 appearances and playing just 11% of possible minutes for Iona. In limited playing time, he averaged 1.6 points and 1.6 rebounds per game on 55.9% shooting for the Gaels. Despite his lack of minutes, Sunday is now the only player on the Hofstra roster with NCAA Tournament experience, as he tallied four points and a rebound in Iona’s first round loss to the eventual champion University of Connecticut Huskies.
The addition of Sunday continues to reinforce a position of need for Hofstra men’s basketball head coach Speedy Claxton and the Pride, as the graduation of Warren Williams and Nelson Boachie-Yiadom has left the frontcourt shorthanded. Sunday is the second forward to transfer to Hofstra this offseason, as he will join fellow portal acquisition Myles Wilmoth in the frontcourt.
Sunday has four years of eligibility remaining. With over 1,200 players still in the transfer portal, Hofstra still has two roster spots to fill before the beginning of the 2023-24 season begins in November.
