With the start of its 2023 season impending, the Hofstra women’s golf team signed Brad Johnson as its new coach. Coming from Division III Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, Johnson hopes to have an exciting and memorable experience in his first year of coaching at Hofstra.
“It’s a great opportunity for me,” Johnson said. “The women’s team here has a lot of potential, and I know the current members of the team are incredible.”
Johnson, a three-time national champion, now takes the place of Scott Mugeo, who had coached the team since 2019. Although team members were taken aback by the sudden coaching change, they’re remaining optimistic for what they can accomplish with Johnson now at the helm.
“It took us by surprise, but it’s good to get a new coach and see how he plans to improve the program,” said sophomore Hannah Morello. “The change of coach definitely affected the amount of tournaments we play. We only have three this season, which is definitely disappointing, but I’m hoping it leads to opportunities in the fall. I can’t speak for everyone, but I am excited to get a new perspective on how he coaches a team. I hope he gives us some feedback on golf and how we can improve.”
Sydney Lippmann, a junior who joined the team in the fall of 2022, wasn’t expecting this drastic change during her first season.
“While what happened wasn’t ideal, it’s better late than never,” Lippmann said.
As he takes the reins, Johnson isn’t looking to make changes too quickly.
“I know first impressions are important, but I think you have to be true to yourself and just be who you are,” Johnson said. “Some people are going to love you, and some people aren’t. I just want them to enjoy the process. “It’s a lot of new changes for them.”
Johnson began coaching after working at golf courses and clubs his entire life. He loves to teach and even spent a few years in Japan, where he taught English. Although he has experienced plenty of success in his coaching career, Johnson’s favorite thing about being a coach is the student-athletes, regardless of the school or level.
“The paperwork, the recruiting, all that stuff is tough, but what makes it worthwhile are the student-athletes,” Johnson said.
Now firmly in place at Hofstra, Johnson and the women’s golf team are looking forward to success going forward.
