The Hofstra Men’s soccer team tied against the No. 24 ranked University of Virginia Cavaliers with a final score of 1-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022, at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia. The tie puts the Pride’s overall record at 9-3-2 while Virginia’s record becomes 8-4-2.
Ryan Carmichael scored the lone goal for Hofstra off a free kick from 19 yards out in the 66’. The kick was a blast, soaring high over the wall of players and into the top right corner giving the Pride the first goal of the game and the lead. The goal was Carmichael’s eighth of the season, as he has now scored in three consecutive games, placing him safely in second place for the team lead behind Eliot Goldthorp.
However, the lead was short-lived, as less than ten minutes later, Virginia answered back when Phillip Horton buried a penalty kick to tie the game at one as he faked Hofstra goalkeeper Wessel Speel with a swift stutter step that sent him to the ground early.
The Pride were completely outshot by Virginia 14-2, with both shots coming in the second half and both being on goal, while the Cavaliers only totaled three that made it on target. The two shots are the lowest total for Hofstra season thus far this year, and the first half was the only half in which the Pride were held without a shot this season.. The 14 shots against were the most Speel had seen in any game all season, with 13 being the previous high.
Nine different players registered shots for Virginia as midfielder Axel Ahlander, and forward Daniel Mangarov both led the team with three, while defender Moritz Kappelsberger was not far behind with two. Horton, Triton Beauvois, and Ahlander were the only players to shoot the ball on goal.
Hofstra was outshot 6-0 before getting their first shot of the game in the52’from Goldthorp. Surrounded by defenders, Goldthorp smashed the ball from the corner of the penalty area that Virginia goalkeeper Holden Brown had to leap for and barely push over the top of the net with an outstretched arm, keeping it a scoreless game at the time. From there, the only other shot Brown saw for the rest of the game was Carmichael’s that went past him.
In terms of fouls, Hofstra was the more disciplined team on the field. The Pride only took ten penalties through 90 minutes, while the Cavaliers had 18.
The Pride remain winless in all four matches against Virginia with an all-time record of 0-3-1 while also being 18-22-7 all-time against nationally ranked opponents.
Hofstra will head to Pennsylvania next to play fellow Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) team Drexel University on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 P.M. After that, they will stay in state and to play against Lafayette College before heading back home for one more CAA game against the College of Charleston to wrap up the regular season.
