Eliot Goldthorp’s three goals propelled the Hofstra men’s soccer team to a 5-1 win on Tuesday, Oct. 4, on the road against Columbia University. Goldthorp continued his impressive sophomore campaign scoring his first hat-trick of the year. Five goals is a single-game high for the team this season.
The Pride wasted no time chasing a victory as Oliver Svalander scored the first goal of the game for The Pride just seven minutes into the match. Although Goldthorp was the main attraction, Svalander also had himself quite the game as he finished with two goals and an assist. After jumping out to the early 1-0 lead, the Pride dictated the tempo of the game, testing Columbia goalie Andreas Zamnian with a slew of shots. Despite allowing five goals, Zamanian also had five saves during the game as well.
During the 33rd minute, Columbia drew a penalty kick, and forward Ryan Kipness evened up the game at one goal apiece.
Going into the second half tied 1-1, Hofstra made adjustments and elevated their play tremendously. Ten minutes into the half the Pride drew their first of two penalty kicks, leading to Goldthorp picking up his first of three goals to make it a 2-1 game. Less than three minutes later, Goldthorp was awarded another penalty kick, which he converted to give Hofstra a two-goal advantage.
Hofstra continued to dominate the possession, pulling away quickly from Columbia. Hofstra also had a heavy shot total advantage, outshooting their opponents 17-4 in the match. In the 63rd minute, Svalander picked up his second goal of the game, assisted by Hendrik Hebbeker and pushing the lead to 4-1. Two minutes later, Goldthorp completed his hat trick as his third goal of the game, which was assisted by Svalander and pushed the lead to 5-1.
A dominant showing by Hofstra increases their record to 7-2-1. The Pride will continue their road trip as their next game comes on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. at UNC-Wilmington.
