The Hofstra women’s Basketball team finally put an end to their 10-game losing streak with a victory over UNC Wilmington 56-40 on Feb. 1. With the victory, the Pride pick up their first conference win of the season as well as their first victory since their 72-56 victory over Kennesaw State on Nov. 6.
Hofstra came out of the gate flying, scoring nine points before the Seahawks could even get on the scoreboard. And once the Pride took control of the game, they never looked back. While Hofstra’s offense was on fire, their defense was just as stellar. Hofstra allowed only four points in the first quarter, as well as only one field goal. Hofstra took a 13-4 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter saw Hofstra have similar success. Hofstra held the Seahawks to only nine-second quarter points, and 13 first-half points. Although Hofstra allowed over double the points in the second half, Hofstra played stellar defense throughout the game, as UNC Wilmington shot only 25% from the field throughout the contest. Hofstra brought a commanding 29-13 lead into halftime
The third quarter and fourth quarter saw the Pride continue to build on their early game success. Scoring an additional 27 points in the second half. UNC Wilmington also added 27 points of their own. However, Hofstra’s early lead was too much to overcome for the Seahawks as the pride cruised to a 56-40 victory.
Hofstra’s offense was just as strong as their defense. Redshirt senior Jaala Henry lead the scoring for the pride in the game, scoring 15 points. Henry also leads the Pride in rebounds with eight, assists with three and was tied for the lead in steals with two.
Redshirt Senior Jaylen Hines was second in scoring for the Pride, scoring 12 points, grabbing six rebounds and adding an assist and a block.
Hofstra, now 1-7 in Colonial Athletic Association play, pick up their first conference victory of the season after seven consecutive conference losses to begin the season. Hofstra still has ten conference games remaining as the Pride will look to replicate Tuesday’s performance in future games. UNC Wilmington falls to 0-7 in CAA competition.
Hofstra will look to build off of Tuesday’s strong victory when they host the Huskies from the University of Northeastern on Sunday. Feb. 6. Tip-off will be at 2 p.m.
