The Hofstra men’s soccer team picked up its fifth victory of the season on Saturday, Sept. 18, defeating Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival Drexel University 2-1 at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The win was the Pride’s first against a conference opponent this year and improved their season record to 5-1.
Midfielders Storm Strongin and Hendrik Hebbeker each scored their second goals of the season. Strongin scored on a penalty kick in the first half and Hebbeker scored midway through the second in what was the highlight play of the game, as he danced around multiple Drexel defenders en route to the score.
The match was anticipated to be a high-scoring contest, as Drexel entered tied for first in the conference in goals scored, led by reigning CAA Offensive Player of the Week Chris Donovan. The Drexel Dragons fired off 14 total shots throughout the match, but Hofstra’s defense proved to be the deciding factor.
“I don’t want to take away from our team’s work ethic, but those guys, [Mason] Tatafu and [George] O’Malley are warriors,” said Hofstra head coach Richard Nuttall. “They take the art of defending seriously and we’re very fortunate to have them.”
Goalkeeper Wessel Speel recorded seven saves and stood strong in goal during the waning minutes of the match, as Drexel seemed to be on the verge of tying the score late while Hofstra struggled to find their bearings.
“I thought we were somewhat comfortable the first ten or fifteen minutes of the half, then just [had a] lack of organization. We gave up two or three chances where some of it was our fault with not great teamwork,” Nuttall said. “I’m really happy with the win, but I’m a bit concerned. We have quite a few things to work on.”
Hofstra continues their homestand on Tuesday , Sept. 21, in a non-conference match against the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson University.
