The Hofstra Pride women’s lacrosse team got themselves back in the win column as they defeated the James Madison University Dukes 13-7 at William G. Tierney Field on April 10.
Saturday’s game marked the first time the Pride played against the nationally-ranked Dukes since the 2019 CAA Championship game.
Four minutes into the first half, Alexa Mattera opened the scoring for the Pride with her 10th goal of the season. Amanda Guerra chipped in her first two goals of the season, giving the Pride an early three-goal lead.
With 15:43 remaining, Alyssa Parrella gave the Pride a four-goal lead when she found the back of the net. With her first goal of the afternoon, she is currently first all-time in the CAA in points.
Despite Emma Greenhill getting the Dukes on the scoreboard with their first goal of the game, Grace Langella responded quickly, giving the Pride a four-goal lead once again.
James Madison went on a three-goal run as Isabella Peterson, Charlotte Haggerty and Kacey Knobloch found the back of the net, cutting the margin to one goal.
With 2:08 left in the first half, Katie Whelan responded with her first goal of the afternoon. She was assisted by Parrella, giving the Pride some breathing room.
Heading into halftime, Hofstra led 6-4.
It didn’t take long for the Pride to gain momentum in the second half as Whelan chipped in on two straight goals to give Hofstra a four-goal lead.
Despite Rachel Matey adding her first goal of the afternoon for James Madison, Hofstra responded with a three-goal run with a pair from Parrella and one from Whelan to give the Pride a six-goal lead.
After Knobloch’s second goal of the afternoon for the Dukes, Whelan found the back of the net twice for her fifth and sixth goals of the afternoon.
Taylor Marchetti added the seventh goal of the afternoon for the Dukes with 46 seconds left in the second half, but ultimately the Hofstra Pride had the upper hand and earned the win.
Jess Smith got the win for Hofstra as she collected nine saves during the afternoon.
Along with Whelan’s six goals, she collected two assists on the afternoon posting a game-high of eight points.
With the win, Alyssa Parrella officially moves up to first place in the CAA in career points with 330.
Darcie Smith, Kate Fiola and Shannon Boyle each collected two ground balls for Hofstra en route to the win.
The Pride looks to next Sunday, April 18 as they head to Philadelphia to take on Drexel University. Face-off is scheduled for 1 pm.
