The Hofstra women’s basketball team fell to the University of Delaware Blue Hens by a score of 80-59 on Friday, Jan. 10, at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark.
The loss was the fourth in a row for the Pride and the second in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) contests, bringing the Pride’s conference record to 0-2 and overall record to 3-10. Meanwhile, Delaware improved to 5-9 this season and 1-2 in CAA contests.
After much of the first quarter was tightly contested, a three-pointer from Abby Gonzales to close the frame allowed the Blue Hens to pull away with a 21-15 lead. The Pride remained at a deficit for the remainder of the contest.
They cut the lead to just three points in the second quarter, but an 8-0 run from Delaware, lasting over three minutes, stopped them in their tracks and Hofstra went into halftime trailing the Blue Hens, 35-24.
The loss can be attributed in great part to Delaware’s advantage on the glass. The Blue Hens out-rebounded the Pride 54-35 in the game, including a 29-15 disparity in the first half, playing a large part in Delaware’s building and maintaining its lead.
“We knew tonight was going to be a battle on the boards,” said Hofstra head coach Danielle Santos after the loss. “Delaware does a great job of rebounding the basketball … we knew we had to match their intensity there. [Rebounding] is what we do, that’s one of our strengths, but we didn’t bring that tonight.”
Jaylen Hines tied her second-highest scoring total of the season with a team-high of 15 points. She went 6-for-11 from the field and came close to posting a double-double, as she finished with nine rebounds. She was a highlight on the defensive end as well, accumulating three steals and one block.
Marianne Kalin finished with 10 points, going 5-for-7 from the field. The Pride’s only other players to finish the contest with a field goal percentage of at least 50% were Mikiyah Croskey and Shawn Mills, going 3-for-5 and 1-for-2, respectively.
Sorelle Ineza and Ana Hernandez Gil struggled offensively, as each finished with just three shots made on double-digit attempts. Ineza went 3-for–11 and 1-for-4 on three-point attempts, while Hernandez Gil shot 3-for-12 and went 1-for-9 from beyond the arc.
For Delaware, four players scored in double-digits: Jasmine Dickey (game-high 21), Nicole Enabosi (12), Kayla Shaw (12) and Lizzie Oleary (12). Dickey also led both teams in rebounds with 16 and Shaw was the only player in the contest to make multiple shots from beyond the arc, going 4-for-8 on three-pointers.
The Pride return to action on Sunday, Jan. 12, continuing CAA play as they travel to face the Drexel University Dragons.
