Hofstra baseball lost its matchup against Long Island University Brooklyn 10-1 on Wednesday, April 3, at home. The Pride fell to 4-19 on the season while the Blackbirds improved to 9-16.
Both teams got off to a slow start with neither side getting on the board until LIU hit two home runs in the fourth inning. Already up 2-0, LIU loaded the bases in the sixth on three walks and scored twice on Luiny Monegro’s RBI double. The Pride got their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Vito Friscia hit the 20th homerun of his career by launching a shot to right field to finally get Hofstra on the board. From there, the Pride’s offense was completely shut down as they were forced to watch LIU’s offense score at will. LIU scored six more runs as their lead ballooned to 10-1.
Blackbirds starter Chris Buehler (1-0) got the win after he threw four scoreless innings with two strikeouts and only allowed two hits. For Hofstra, starter Mark Faello took the loss after he allowed two runs on four hits over the course of four innings. He did, however, strikeout five batters.
Friscia’s milestone ties him for No. 8 all-time at Hofstra with his 20 home runs.
The Pride had three extra-base hits as Vinnie Costello and Kevin O’Connor doubled to go along with Friscia’s home run. Anthony D’Onofrio stole a team-high fourth base of the season.
With the loss, Hofstra is now 26-24 all-time versus LIU Brooklyn.
Hofstra will look to recover on Friday, April 5, as they travel to play Northeastern University on the road at 2:30 p.m.
