Alyssa Parrella had five goals in her move down from midfield to attack while Maddie Fields posted nine saves in net to lead the Hofstra women’s lacrosse team to a 17-8 win over Columbia University on Tuesday.
The Pride move to 4-4 on the year while Columbia falls to 3-6 with the loss.
Throughout the beginning of the first half, Columbia kept it close to Hofstra. Up until the 5:35 mark in the first half, the Pride’s biggest lead of the game was two goals on three separate occasions. After Alexa Mattera scored her second goal of the first half, Hofstra went up 6-3.
Following a Columbia goal 25 seconds later to cut the lead back to two goals, Hofstra went on a three-goal run. In the run, Parrella scored her fourth goal and Drew Shapiro scored with 30 seconds left to make it 9-4. Shapiro has scored at least one goal in every game this season.
Hofstra opened up the second half hot, piling on another three-goal run to make it a total of six straight including the goals from the first half. All were unassisted, as Mattera, Shapiro, and Darcie Smith beat their defenders 1-on-1.
Columbia netted one to stop the run, but the Pride would continue to dominate as they went on another run for five straight goals to take a commanding 17-5 lead. Eight different Hofstra players contributed on the run whether it was scoring or assisting, including Parrella getting her fifth goal of the game and Mattera getting her fourth.
Hofstra went 4-of-7 on free position free position shots, with Parrella and Mattera each netting two. The Pride got it done at the center dot, winning 19-of-27 draw controls.
Hofstra will play again Friday as they travel to Central Connecticut State University for a 7 p.m. matchup.
