The Hofstra University volleyball team opened CAA (Coastal Athletic Association) play being swept 3-0 by their Long Island rivals, the Stony Brook University Seawolves on Friday, Sept. 20.
Coming off a win against Sacred Heart the weekend prior, the Pride could not catch up with the Seawolves, who were a step ahead all night.
Besides the losses, Clara Bal continues to dominate with another 16 kill performance with Izadora Stedile behind her with 13 kills and 20 digs.
Kali Moore led the Seawolves with 17 kills while Torri Henry aided with 33 assists and 14 digs as they pushed themselves apart from the Pride. Stony Brook now has an 8-2 record on the year while Hofstra remains at a 4-6 clip.
Although the Pride got swept, they kept themselves in the first two sets, tying the game six times in the first set alone. In the first set, they were tied at 21, but a kill by Moore and three attack errors put the Seawolves at 24-21. A kill by Stedile and two attack errors on the Stony Brook side tied the game at 24 in favor of the Pride. However, another attack error and service error put the Seawolves on top 26-24.
With only a 1-0 lead in the match, the Pride remained alive as the second set was a back-and-forth affair. It came down to the final couple of points in the set again tied at 22. A Bal kill put Hofstra up 23-22, but Stony Brook cashed in two kills ending the second set 25-23.
Now down 2-0 in the series with their backs against the wall, Hofstra seemed deflated as the Seawolves punched Hofstra in the mouth early and dominated the third set. A four-point rally late in the match started by two kills from Moore was the dagger, giving Stony Brook a 25-18 set win and a clean 3-0 sweep of the match.
With Hofstra now 0-1 in the CAA, they looked to salvage the spit from the series on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m.
