After a series sweep against Towson University, the Hofstra University softball team took a 2-0 shutout from St. John’s University on Tuesday, April 7. The Pride only tallied three hits in the loss.
In the circle for the Pride was reigning Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Pitcher of the Week Emma Falen, who made her 15th start of the season. She entered the afternoon with a 9-7 record, alongside a 2.24 ERA, pitching 4.2 innings. Falen allowed six hits, walked four batters, struck out five players and allowed two runs, earning the loss.
For the Red Storm, Loreley Francia stepped in the circle and made her 19th start of the season. She entered the game with an 11-6 record, alongside a 3.33 ERA. She pitched six shutout innings, only allowed two hits, walked a batter, struck out nine players and earned her 12th win of the season.
The Red Storm started scoring in the second inning. After Makenna Meadows singled to the right of the second baseman, allowing Ana Serafinko to score from second base, opening the score.
St. John’s scored their second run of the game in the fifth after Natasha Limbani doubled to center field, scoring Elanna Lysiak. The second run ended Falen’s afternoon, and the Pride went to Madison Steppe to finish the game. She pitched 1.1 innings and did not allow a baserunner.
The Red Storm looked to Serafinko to lock down the save, and she answered the call. Serafinko walked a batter but rebounded to lock down her fourth save of the season.
With the loss, Hofstra dropped to 21-16 on the season, while St. John’s improved to 26-13.
The Pride looks to rebound as they start a weekend CAA series with Campbell University. The series opens Friday, April 10, and for the first time this season, Hofstra will play on campus. First pitch from Bill Edwards Stadium is set for 5 p.m.
