The Hofstra Pride fell in a close contest, 3-1, to the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday afternoon.
Hofstra and Penn State alternated sets early on, with the Lions winning the first set, and the Pride taking control of the second. Penn State won the first set 25-21, and Hofstra won the second 25-22.
Going into the third set, the match was tied at 1, with no clear favorite amongst the two teams. That all changed in the third set, however. In the third, the Lions limited the Pride to 12 kills, while Penn State once again won with 25. The fourth set was much the same as the third, as Penn State limited Hofstra to 11 kills this time, en route to their fourth win of the season.
For the Pride, Nanishka Perez led the team with 13 kills; Veronika Kostova tallied 11, and Lecticia Valente recorded 10 kills. Luisa Sydlik led the team with three aces; Laura Masciullo and Perez had one a piece.
Perez recorded three blocks on the game, and Masciullo and Kostova each had two. In terms of assists, Hannah Klemm led the day with 25, Sydlik had 15, and Luisa Domingues had two. Perez and Domingues each recorded double-digits in digs, with Perez notching 11, and Domingues recording 10. Masciullo had nine digs for the Pride.
For the Lions, Simone Lee led with 21 kills, while Haleigh Washington had 11, and Tori Gorrell had seven. Simone and Pierce Lainy each led Penn State with two aces, while Abby Detering had one. As for blocks, Gorrell recoded eight on the day, Heidi Thelen notched five, and Detering had four.
Assists-wise, Detering recorded a game-high 41, while Ali Frantti and Keeton and Holcomb had one a piece. In addition to assists, Detering also led the Lions with 10 digs, while Kendall White had seven, and Ali Frantti recorded five digs on the day for Penn State.
With the loss, Hofstra dropped to 6-3 on the season, and Penn State improved to 4-3. Neither team has played a conference opponent yet.
