A comeback victory was in the cards for the Pride in Williamsburg, as the Hofstra women’s lacrosse team edged the William and Mary Tribe in overtime by a final score of 10-9.
Hofstra freshman attacker Lexi Lenaghan scored the game-winning goal with 5:29 left in overtime.
Trailing 9-5 with 19 minutes remaining in the contest, sophomore midfielder Carlee Ancona notched an unassisted goal. That would catapult a five-goal outburst that would eventually give Hofstra the victory.
After the goal, Lexi Lenaghan, who ended up scoring the game-winner, would tally an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to 9-7.
Then, graduate attacker Lindsay Scott, who led the Pride with four goals and an assist on the day, would score the final two goals in regulation to tie up the game.
Scott has been the most productive player for Hofstra this year, as she leads the team on the season with 35 goals. No other player has more than 13.
On the other hand, William and Mary’s Shannon Quinn led them on the day with two goals and two assists. The Tribe had a balanced scoring attack as Shannon Quinn, Lindsey Jenks, and Hannah Ryan had two goals apiece.
William and Mary made it a three-goal lead quickly to open up the second half before Hofstra made it 6-5. However, at that point, the Tribe would take a commanding four-goal lead, scoring three times in a four-minute span. That would make it 9-5, which is when Hofstra went on its run.
Hofstra emulated William and Mary’s balanced scoring attack, as the Pride got four goals from Lindsay Scott, and two goals apiece from Morgan Knox and Lexi Lanaghan. Sophomore midfielder Carolyn Carrera tied Alfano for game-high honors with five draw controls, leading Hofstra to a 13-8 advantage.
Additionally, freshman goalie Maddie Fields got the win, recording five saves for the Pride. She improves her record to 6-4 on the season, sharing time with Alexis Greene in goal.
After starting the season with five straight losses, the Pride has showed a little bit of life, going 3-2 in the last five games. This is Hofstra’s second win in a row, and first in CAA play.
The Pride will look to improve and continue its winning ways when the team travels to Harrisonburg, Virginia to take on the James Madison Dukes. Game time is Sunday at 1 p.m.
