Four Hofstra basketball players have been arrested early Thursday morning by the Nassau County Police Dept. Sophomore guard Shaquille Stokes and freshmen, guards Dallas Anglin, Kentrell Washington and forward Jimmy Hall have been charged with burglary in the dormitories on campus.
According to the NCPD, between the dates of Oct. 4 and Nov. 5, the four suspects entered six unlocked dorm rooms and stole an undetermined amount of money, a Sony laptop, headphones, three MacBook Pro’s, an iPod, two iPads and an iTouch.
Stokes is charged with five accounts of second degree burglary, Washington with four, Hall with two and Anglin with one along with one count of tampering with physical evidence.
The four were arraigned today at the First District Court in Hempstead.
In a statement released by Hofstra Athletics, the players have been “immediately suspended from the basketball team, classes, residence halls and facilities, pending the outcome of their case.”
After an ongoing investigation with the help of Hofstra Public Safety, NCPD were able to correctly identify the four players.
Hofstra head coach Mo Cassara and Athletic Director Jeff Hathaway were unavailable for comment today. Cassara will address the media tomorrow after the Pride plays Southern Methodist at 4 p.m.
Hall was enjoying a freshman campaign that had him record three double-doubles in the team’s first six games while Stokes, a Hawaii transfer, hit a game winning three-pointer two weekends ago against South Dakota State, quickly making him a fan favorite.
Washington and Anglin gave the Pride good guard play off the bench, though they were not seeing significant minutes.
Update, 3:30 p.m.: Despite media reports stating the players arrested were also suspected in stealing personal items from Coach Cassara, Hofstra Athletics released a statement to the press that Cassara’s personal items went missing on May 11th. At that time none of the players arrested were on campus or were part of the Hofstra Community.
Update, 5:32 p.m.: In response to the arrest of the four men’s basketball players, Hofstra university has released the following statement to students via email.
“By now many of you have seen the media accounts of the arrest of four Hofstra Men’s basketball student-athletes for burglaries that occurred on campus. Our Department of Public Safety has worked in close cooperation with the Nassau County Police Department to investigate these burglaries. The University has suspended all of these students from the University, including classes and the athletic program, and banned them from campus pending the final disposition of the charges.
Our first priority is to ensure that our campus is safe and secure, and that our entire community understands that criminal activities of any type will not be tolerated. We will continue to promote the safety, health and welfare of our students in every way possible. We are saddened and distressed by these events.”
Update, 12/1, 12:43 p.m.:
