The Hofstra University volleyball team lost their first match of the season to the College of Charleston by a final score of 3-2 on Sept. 26. The Pride started their season with their best record in program history and were undefeated after winning nine straight matches to begin the 2025 season. This marks the Pride’s first loss and moves them to 9-1 on the season and 2-1 in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play.
Coming into Friday’s matchup, Charleston sat at an even 0.500 winning percentage with a 6-6 record but were able to obtain a winning record with a nail-biting five set thriller win against the Pride.
Charleston started off hot and won the first set 25-20. In response, the Pride stormed back to win the second and third sets by scores of 25-11 and 26-24, respectively. During the third set, Charleston was up until Hofstra came back to win it in the final plays of the set.
The Pride had a 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth set, but the Cougars came back to win the fourth and fifth sets by two points each set. Charleston won 26-14 in the fourth set and won 15-13 in the fifth set, locking down an intense 3-2 win for the defending CAA champions.
Senior Izadora Stedile obtained 24 kills during the match, joining the “1,000 kills club” at Hofstra. Stedile is just one of 18 Hofstra players to ever reach this milestone – Hofstra has not had a player with over 1,000 kills since 2018. During the match, Stedile also had one ace and added 22 digs. Stedile has been a rockstar performer for Hofstra, accumulating a total of 182 points and 165 kills through just 10 matches this season.
Hofstra had contributors of every level, from freshman to seniors. Clara Bal, senior, notched 17 kills, three blocks and a service ace throughout the match. Beatriz Braga helped the Pride with 16 kills and two blocks. The junior has had an amazing season so far with 134 points and 118 kills. Braga is second to Stedile with the most points and kills this season.
First-year standout, Nina Jioshvili-Ravva, had a season best 41 assists and 11 digs. She has accumulated 50 points and 18 kills this season.
The loss moves the Pride out of the first-place position in CAA standings. The Pride stayed down in Charleston, North Carolina to take on the Cougars on Sept. 27 for the finale of the two-match set. Match time was set for noon.
