It was not until the 28th game of the 2026 season that the Hofstra University baseball team took their first shutout loss of the season. They lost 5-0 to Stony Brook University on Saturday, April 11.
With the loss, Hofstra fell to 11-17 overall and 6-8 in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play. Stony Brook improved to 10-21 overall and 7-10 in CAA play, breaking a three-game losing streak.
The highlight of the game came from Stony Brook starter Micah Worley, who threw a season-high 13 strikeouts in 7.1 innings pitched. Worley gave up a trio of hits and a pair of singles to Nick Biddle in the third and seventh innings, and he gave a double to Gabriel Melara in the bottom of the fourth. He only walked one batter, issuing a full-count free pass to CJ Griggs to open the bottom of the fifth.
Hofstra starter Joseph Curreri allowed two runs on four hits in 3.0 innings pitched, albeit giving up an unearned run in the top of the first. Leadoff batter Nick Zampieron reached first on an error committed by Tyler Castrataro, then Curreri loaded the bases on back-to-back singles from Nicholas Dromboski and Chanz Doughty before a double play sent Zampieron home.
With one out in the top of the second, Aidyn Coffey hit a double to right field, then stole third base for his eighth stolen bag of the season. Curreri walked James Schafer and then dealt a wild pitch that sent Coffey home.
The game remained at a 2-0 score for five innings before reliever Jackson Bauer ended his scoreless outing by giving up a first pitch double to Doughty, which opened the top of the eighth. Tanner Sanderoff came in for relief, loaded the bases, walked Chris Carson and gave up a base hit to Scott Gell.
On a fielder’s choice issued to Coffey, stellar defense spearheaded by Biddle helped the Pride get the runner out at home. Mike Cervoni followed at the plate, hitting a single and driving in three runs. After a run scored by Carson that was issued to Bauer, the Pride’s defense appeared shaken up, and the Seawolves took advantage of errors by Nick Gallello and Michael Brown to further advance the runners and send Gell and Coffey home.
Hofstra staged a comeback to avoid a shutout, but their attempt was unsuccessful. Brown and JJ DeVito recorded back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the ninth, but Melara struck out, and Castrataro hit into a double play to end the game.
The Pride continued their trend of playing Sunday rubber games in CAA play when they ended their series against the Seawolves on Sunday, April 12. First pitch was set for noon.
