The Hofstra University baseball team got shutout by Northeastern University 8-0 on Friday, April 24. With the loss, the Pride dropped to 14-21, while the Huskies improved to 24-16, currently riding a three-game win streak.
Carlos Martinez started off rocky for Hofstra, allowing five men on base in the first eight batters faced. After that Martinez only allowed two runners on base until the sixth inning, when he allowed a leadoff hit to Ryan Gerety and a home run to Matt Brinker, who also drove in the Huskies’ first run of the game in the opening frame.
The two-run home run was the second allowed by Martinez all season. It was the only extra-base hit he allowed in the game.
In 5.1 innings, Martinez allowed four runs on five hits and recorded nine strikeouts, four walks and one hit by pitch.Â
Brayden Gregg replaced Martinez and threw 1.1 innings, allowing four hits and one run. During his outing, he made a balk and walked one batter.Â
Deuce Musial came into relief for the Pride in the seventh inning. In his performance, he allowed four hits and three runs over 1.1 innings and struck out one batter.Â
During his start, Northeastern starter Robbie O’Connor pitched 6.0 innings allowing five hits and no runs, additionally striking out seven batters.
Andrew Rogovic, who replaced O’Connor, pitched 2.0 innings, neither allowing a hit nor a walk, and striked out three batters. He was replaced by David McSweeney who pitched 1.0 inning, allowed one hit and got one strikeout. Â
Hofstra’s first hit of the game came on the first pitch of the second inning by Gabriel Melara. Overall Hofstra went 6-32, while Northeastern went 13-32.Â
During the game, Northeastern’s leadoff hitter got on base in the first three innings, but after that the bats went quiet until the sixth inning. The Huskies got five leadoff hits throughout the game, which helped set up their offense to score runs. Northeastern stole two bases and got caught stealing twice. Hofstra’s pitching staff knew coming into the game that the Huskies were going to try stealing, so they tried picking off runners over 15 times, only one of which was successful. Hofstra had their leadoff hitter on base in three innings but couldn’t send any of them home.Â
Hofstra recorded six hits, 10 strikeouts and had five batters left on base. Northeastern recorded 13 hits, 10 strikeouts, five walks, two stolen bases and got hit twice by pitches.
The series continued on Saturday, April 25. First pitch was at 1 p.m.
