By Robert Pelaez – SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE
The Hofstra field hockey team has been hot as of late, winning their past six games and showed no signs of slowing down on Friday.
While both teams experienced the torrential downpour on the field, the Pioneers of Sacred Heart University also experienced a downpour of goals from the Pride, as Hofstra took this one easily, 9-1.
The Pride scored early and often en route to victory, as junior forward Claudia Marin Samper looked unstoppable, recording a career-high eight points off of a hat trick and a pair of assists.
Fresh off of earning the past two CAA player of the week awards, sisters Simca and Stella Schoen each tacked on a goal and an assist as well. Simca was actually utilized as a defender to replace Leigh Maxwell-Smith, who did not play.
When asked about Simca’s performance, Pride head coach Kathy De Angelis said, “She’s got great attacking skills, her fundamentals are just so strong, and she’s very poised in the attacking third”.
When Kathy De Angelis was asked if she believes if her team’s best defense right now, is the offense, she wittingly replied.
“I couldn’t have said it better myself,” said De Angelis, “You win games based on your defense, and your defense puts the attack in position, and we’ve been doing that better and better and better all year.”
There’s no question Hofstra was dominant in the drubbing of the Pioneers, winning the shots category 36-3. The Pride never took their foot off the gas pedal, firing on all cylinders from the moment the stepped on the field as they move up to 9-3 on the season.
Up next for Hofstra, they have one road game at Columbia on Sunday at 1pm to tune up before the showdown at home against nationally ranked No. 13 Delaware.
