Simca and Stella Schoen used a little bit of sister magic on Sunday, scoring three goals as part of another dominant showing from the Hofstra field hockey team. The Pride routed Colgate University on Sunday at the Hofstra field hockey stadium by a lopsided 7-1 score.
“Well anytime you score that number of goals you can’t anything but elated and happy. So right now, I have a big smile on our execution and not getting complacent,” said head coach Kathy DeAngelis. “Simca [Schoen] had great attack today and I think our front line worked well around her that gave her some open areas.”
The sisters, all the way from Hamburg, Germany, were two of the five Pride players to find the back of the net on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Hempstead.
Younger sister Simca, a sophomore, scored two goals for the Pride, while Stella, the elder Schoen, added one in the victory. Freshman Samantha Schlegel also had two goals, while Colby Hussong and Claudia Marin-Samper added one each for the Pride.
It was somewhat of a slow start for the Pride, as they failed to score for a majority of the first half.
The defense held down the fort well, and Colby Hussong was the first player to break through at the 22:17 mark, scoring off of an assist from Marin-Samper, who had three assists on the day.
Just two minutes later, Simca Schoen scored, and Schlegel followed up that up with a goal of her own forty seconds later, running the score to 3-0 in favor of the Pride. The freshman from Pennsylvania wasn’t done yet, sneaking another one past the Colgate goalkeeper two minutes later, stretching the lead to 4-0. Stella Schoen added one more to make it 5-0 going into the half.
The offensive onslaught continued in the second half, with the Pride launching 27 shots in the last 35 minutes.
Simca Schoen notched another goal, and Marin-Samper scored her fourth goal of the season to push the Pride’s lead to 7-0.
Molly Klare put the Colgate Raiders on the board in the final minutes, but it wasn’t enough, and Hofstra improved to 2-0 with the victory.
The Hofstra field action heads up to Maine for their first road matchup of the season. They’ll be taking on the University of Maine Black Bears on Friday, September 4th at 3:00 P.M.
