The Hofstra field hockey team dominated on the road against Towson University Friday night, defeating the Tigers 3-0 in the Pride’s conference opener.
The two goals conducted by senior Claudia Marin Samper and graduate student Marloes Schavemaker gave Hofstra all the offense needed, marking the Pride’s ninth win. Hofstra showed persistence during the first period with 14 shots, while Towson only had one. The Pride posted five penalty corners by senior Colby Hussong and one by senior Emily Gallagher in the first 15 minutes of the game. However, Towson’s defense was able to stop the Pride from scoring early on due to goalie Emilee Woodall’s presence in the net. Woodall compiled four saves in the same 15 minute span.
The Pride’s persistence quickly paid off with the first goal by Marin Samper around 20 minutes into the game. This goal was Marin Samper’s 13th of the season and her 14th was not too far behind. At the 33:38 mark, she was assisted by Gallagher and tallied her second goal of the game.
By the end of the first half, Hofstra had ten penalty corners under its belt and a penalty stroke. Towson, on the other hand, had nine saves and continued to put up a fight against the Pride.
The energy did not change during the second half of the game. Hofstra took 11 shots while Towson shot none. The scoreboard, however, remained the same until Schavemaker, assisted by Gallagher, shot her second goal of the season and the third goal of the game at 65:15.
The Pride finalized the game 3-0 and showed outstanding persistence throughout the game with an overall total of 25 shots and 18 penalty corners. Towson University finished the game with one shot, but showed a strong defensive effort with 15 saves throughout the entire game.
