The Hofstra University field hockey team was narrowly defeated by Central Michigan University 3-2 in double overtime on Saturday, Sept. 7. After suffering a defeat to the University of Maine the day before, the Pride came up short again, causing them to come home from their road trip to Maine 0-2.
This game was the first time Hofstra scored multiple goals since last year’s season finale against Rider University. Defenders Jamie Mc Millan and Teresa Karoff netted the Pride’s two goals on penalty corners.
The Pride and the Chippewas played an even first 15 minutes in all statistical metrics. This was the second game Hofstra had gone toe-to-toe with a difficult opponent and held their own.
Hofstra broke the scoreless tie in the second quarter on Mc Millan’s goal off a corner. Karoff passed the ball to Karissa Hough, who settled it for Mc Millan. She waltzed past the defense and snuck it into the net. This goal gave Hofstra the lead for the first time in any game this season.
That lead stood for Hofstra until the final 15 minutes when both teams had the opportunity to score, but goaltending proved tough to beat in the rest of the second and third quarters. Hofstra goaltender Pieke Roos made four saves over those two quarters.
Hofstra nearly extended their lead on a Tess Satterfield sequence where she had two dangerous shots.
The Chippewas were the next to score on a goal by sophomore Zoey Emrick 45 seconds into the fourth quarter. Later in the quarter, Isabella D’Alessandro broke the tie with a goal for Central Michigan University on a corner with under three minutes to play.
When things looked bleak for the Pride, they turned a solid offensive possession into a corner of their own. Karoff took the corner and passed it to Tara McNally. Similar to Mc Millan’s goal, McNally walked the ball around the defenders and took a shot that Karoff redirected into the Central Michigan University net.
Hofstra’s goal in the final minute pushed play into overtime for the first time for either team this season.
Play tilted in Central Michigan University’s favor during the first overtime period: they gained three offensive corners to Hofstra’s zero.
During the extended time, the Chippewas were awarded a penalty stroke against Roos. Junior Mallory Camryn’s shot was stuffed by Roos and the Pride survived until the end of the first overtime.
Another overtime period was necessary to crown the winner. Camryn redeemed herself, scoring the game-winning goal for the Chippewas three minutes into double overtime to defeat Hofstra 3-2.
The Pride once again ended on the losing effort of a close contest. They look to right the ship on Friday, Sept. 13, when they play at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. Game time is at 7 p.m.
