The Hofstra University women’s soccer team defeated the Hampton University Pirates 4-1 on Thursday, Oct. 5, advancing to 9-3-1 overall and 6-1-1 in conference play. The Pirates fell to 0-14-0 overall and 0-8-0 in conference play.
The most notable player in this game was freshman defender Sasha McTiffin, who scored two of the four goals for the Pride in her first career start.
The first goal of the game came from the Pride’s junior midfielder Olivia Pearse in the 14th minute. Forward Mathilde Braithwaite played the ball to Pearse, who struck it home and opened the game 1-0. This marked Pearse’s third goal of the season and Braithwaite’s third assist of the season.
Sophomore forward Thorhildur Thorhallsdottir was able to double the Pride’s lead in the 20th minute, scoring her second goal of the season off an assist from Louise Hayden.
The next goal for the Pride came from McTiffin, who scored a goal six minutes after Pearse. Senior defender Louise Hayden played the ball to McTiffin, who knocked it into the net for the second goal of the game. This marked Hayden’s first assist of the season.
In the second half, McTiffin scored her second goal, with an assist by Thorhallsdottir. This marked Thorhallsdottir’s third assist of the season.
Hampton did find the back of the net once in the 79th minute. Forward Patricia Wharton scored the lone goal, unassisted, for the Pirates.
Hampton goalkeeper Alexis Deveaux made nine total saves in net. Hofstra had three goalkeepers over the course of the game. Graduate student Skylar Kuzmich played just over 33 minutes, junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Sullivan played almost 42 minutes and senior goalkeeper Avery Holden played almost 15 minutes. No saves were made between the three.
Hofstra finished the game with 23 total shots and 13 on goal. Hampton finished with one total shot on goal. Sophomore midfielder Millie Davies led the team with five total shots, with four on target. McTiffin had three total shots, all of which were goals.
Hofstra finished with seven corner kicks while Hampton finished with one.
The Pride will return home on Thursday, Oct. 12, to face the Elon University Phoenix at Hofstra Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m.
