The No. 16 Hofstra University men’s soccer team tied the University of Virginia Cavaliers 1-1 at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Tuesday, Oct. 3. The Pride’s unbeaten streak extends to 10 games, and their overall record moves to 8-1-3.
Striker Ryan Carmichael gave Hofstra the lead in the 18th minute with a free kick to the bottom left corner of the net. Carmichael, the leading scorer for the Pride, recorded his 10th goal of the season during this game. Their lead didn’t last as Virginia found the equalizer in the 58th minute thanks to midfielder Mouhameth Thiam with an assist from by defender Jack Singer.
Thiam’s goal came two minutes after the Cavaliers were sent down to 10 men following a red card given to starting forward Daniel Mangarov. It was the fourth time this season Hofstra played a man up, but Thiam managed to find the answer for 10-men Virginia. Five cards in total were handed out and 26 fouls were committed between the two sides. Mangarov’s red card seemed to be the breaking point as there had been seven total fouls committed in the first 10 minutes of the second half leading up to his dismissal. Two yellow cards were handed out to the visitors within that span, including Carmichael’s first booking of the season.
Carmichael’s goal was the wake-up call for the Cavaliers as they outshot Hofstra 12-7, including an 8-2 advantage in the first half. Both goalkeepers made four saves, though Hofstra’s Wessel Speel was forced to make all his saves in the opening 45 minutes. Speel, named Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) defensive player of the week for a second consecutive time, conceded his first goal in over 250 minutes of play as he was denied his seventh shutout of the season.
Hofstra head coach Richard Nuttall opted to add a fifth defender to his starting lineup, giving Nico Oberrauch his fourth start of the season and his first since Friday, Sept. 1. Oberrauch made appearances as a substitute in each of the Pride’s three previous games and finally got the starting nod.
Hofstra is now winless in five all-time meetings with the Cavaliers, who came off of a 3-0 win over the No. 8 University of Louisville Cardinals. The Pride is now 0-3-2 all-time against Virginia as they pick up their third draw of the regular season.
The Pride returns home to take on the Monmouth University Hawks in a crucial conference match on Saturday, Oct. 7. The winner of that match will tie the Stony Brook University Seawolves at the top of the CAA standings. Kickoff from Hofstra Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
